This matters when you're comparing prices:

  • 80/20 blend — the common all-season canister
  • 70/30 blend — better cold performance, sold as "winter" or "4-season" canister
  • 100% isobutane — rarely sold, and worse in the cold than the blends

Is isobutane better than propane for camping?

Not better — different. Isobutane is better for backpacking because the whole fuel system weighs 7 oz instead of 2 lb. Propane is better for car camping and cold weather because it costs less per boil and still flows at -40°F. Choose by how far you have to carry it and how cold it gets.

Can I use isobutane in a propane stove?

No. They use different connectors. Isobutane canisters use a threaded EN 417 (Lindal) valve that screws onto the stove. Propane stoves take a regulator fitting for a 1 lb or 20 lb tank. The only exception is a dual-fuel stove designed to accept both — like the Gas One GS-3400P.
