Honest Reviews for Smart Pet Parents

I Put a GPS Tracker on My Dog and Now I'm Obsessed — Tractive GPS Dog Tracker Review

My neighbor’s golden retriever bolted through an open gate last summer. Three hours, 40 neighborhood volunteers, and one very expensive pet psychic later, he was found sleeping under a porch two streets over. The whole ordeal cost my neighbor roughly $300 in “thank you” pizzas and emotional damage.

That’s when I started looking into GPS trackers for dogs. And honestly? I wish I’d done it sooner. The Tractive GPS Dog Tracker isn’t perfect — no subscription-based gadget ever is — but it solves a problem that most pet owners only think about after it’s too late.

Here’s What Actually Happens When Your Dog Disappears

You panic. Then you walk around the neighborhood yelling your dog’s name like a crazy person. Then you post on Nextdoor and brace yourself for passive-aggressive comments about leash laws. It’s not a fun scenario, and “just be more careful” isn’t a real strategy when you’ve got a beagle who treats every open door as a personal challenge.

Tractive clips onto any collar and gives you real-time GPS location on your phone. Like, actual live tracking — you can watch your dog’s little dot move across a map. It works in 175+ countries, which is either impressive or overkill depending on whether your dog is an international traveler. (If they are, we need to talk.)

What I Actually Like

Real-time tracking that works. This isn’t Bluetooth-range nonsense. It uses cellular networks, so you can see your dog’s location from anywhere with cell coverage. I tested it from a coffee shop three miles away, and it showed my dog exactly where he was — on the couch. At least he’s consistent.

Virtual fences are brilliant. Draw a zone on the map — your yard, your street, whatever — and the second your dog leaves it, you get an alert. This feature alone is worth the subscription if you’ve got an escape artist. Unlike temperature monitoring gadgets that tell you something’s wrong after the fact, this one actually prevents the problem.

Activity tracking is a nice bonus. It counts steps and tracks sleep. I discovered my “lazy” dog actually walks about 4 miles a day just pacing around the yard. Respect.

The Stuff That Annoys Me

Subscription required. The device costs around $49, but you’ll pay $5–10/month for the cellular plan. It’s not outrageous, but it’s forever. Like gym membership forever. You don’t own the tracking — you rent it.

Battery life is… fine. Two to five days depending on how often you check live tracking. If you’re refreshing the map every 10 minutes because your dog is actually lost, expect closer to one day. Keep a charger by your bed.

Not for indoor tracking. GPS needs sky. If your dog is hiding under your bed, this won’t help you. (Your dog’s guilty face and the crinkle of a treat bag will.)

Who Should Get This (And Who Shouldn’t)

Get it if: Your dog has ever escaped. You live near busy roads or woods. You travel with your dog. You’re the kind of person who checks on your dog from work (no judgment, I do it too with every pet gadget I own).

Skip it if: Your dog is strictly indoors. You have a cat who never goes outside (they make a cat version, but it’s overkill for a strictly indoor cat). You’re on a tight budget and can’t commit to the monthly subscription.

The Bottom Line

Think of the Tractive GPS tracker as insurance that actually does something. You pay a monthly fee, and in return, you never have to wonder where your dog is. The tech works, the app is solid, and the peace of mind is real. Just charge it regularly and accept that you’re now the kind of person who tracks their dog’s daily step count. We’ve all been there.
